On February 17, at 16:30, the Media Center will conduct an online interview with Anton Shekhovtsov, Director of the Centre for Democratic Integrity (Austria), an expert at the European Platform for Democratic Elections (Germany), and Associate Research Fellow at the Swedish Institute of International Affairs (Sweden) on the topic of “Russia, Ukraine and Western Radical Right-Wings․ Interview with Anton Shekhovtsov, a well-known leading political expert”.
Conspiracy theories are controversial phenomena in the modern world, around which there are many misconceptions. Accordingly, conspiracy theories are specific to non-democratic regimes. It is common to think that they are often used by the leaders of authoritarian states but conspiracy theories are also used in democracies as a tool to shape or manipulate public opinion.
Anton Shekhovtsov’s main area of expertise is the European far right, Russian malign influence in Europe, and illiberal trends in Central and Eastern Europe. He is the author of the Russian language book New Radical Right-Wing Parties in European Democracies (ibidem-Verlag, 2011) and the book Russia and the Western Far Right (Routledge, 2017).
In an interview with the Media Center, the political scientist will tell about the goals pursued in Russia by establishing cooperation with the European Radical right wing, why they are often invited as election observers, or are hosted by Russian TV channels.
In the interview, Anton Shekhovtsov will also address the question of how conspiracy theories influence the political process in Western democracies to spread anti-western propaganda
