Issues CoE Commissioner Pointed out Still Unsolved

Though in his report Human Rights Commissioner Nils Muižnieks impartially focuses on the situation of human rights in Armenia, there are no actual positive shifts in the country, said human rights defenders at the Media Center hosted discussion.

Earlier on March 10 human rights commissioner Nils Muižnieks issued the report of his October visit to Armenia. The report reads gender inequality and violence against women are serious human rights concerns in Armenia and more vigorous efforts are needed to address them.

Arman Danielyan believes the Commissioner has issued a comprehensive and accurate analysis and the report does not specify new points.

Yervand Varosyan and Lusine Sahakyan agreed there are no actual shifts. “The reprt mainly focuses on the judicial system of Armenia. As long as we lack an independent court, we will have nothing no matter how many times we amend laws,” Varosyan said.

Instead of strategies, Armenia needs political will to initiate systematic reforms, the speakers believe.
