“Solutions to the Problems of People with Disabilities in Pre-Election Programs”
May 3, 11:00

A discussion entitled Solutions to the Problems of People with Disabilities in Pre-Election Programs” was held at Media Center on May 3.

The speakers were Zara Batoyan, “Yelq” Alliance, and Ruzanna Zakaryan, Head of Social Department of Yerevan Municipality.

At the beginning of the discussion, speakers referred to the problems of accessibility for people with disabilities in the city. Zara Batoyan said that during the recent years a stereotype has developed that, for example, building ramps solves the city's accessibility problems but there are deeper problems, which are not taken into account properly.

“The main problem is access to transport, urban development problems that do not enable freedom of movement for people with mobility problems. I also want to note that the accessible environment does not mean only ramps. Now another stereotype was shaped when ramps mean accessible environment. That's not the point. Yes, ramps are being built in some places but all inclusive approaches are absent from all standards development initiatives,” Batoyan said.
