Discussion: “The dramatic aggravation of the situation at the contact line”

"The situation is serious and it is like a war," told Stepan Grigoryan, the President of "Globalization and Regional Cooperation" NGO, during discussion upon “The situation is dramatic aggravation on the border," at Media Center, noting that at the current situation Armenia's MFA must submit the request to the UN to convene the Security Council session.

"It is difficult not to link all these developments with yesterday’s meetings in Washington, among which, however, Sargsyan-Aliyev meeting was not taken place, which meant that parties’ approaches have not yet been managed to bring closer so that a meeting has been arranged. As we know, the OSCE Minsk Group has been developing actions to preserve the status quo, and Azerbaijan wants to break the status quo. Azerbaijan took certain actions, seeing that the Minsk Group is not concerned with their predefined directions," said Director of the Armenian Center for Political and International Studies, Aghasi Yenokyan.

According to him, “Russia's active response shows that if the OSCE Minsk Group and international organizations work slowly, then there is a serious opportunity for Russia to settle Karabakh conflict in Russian manner, that is, to deploy Russian peacekeepers in the conflict zone. I believe that this is the reason why the Russian side accurately follows each minute development,” he noted. Referring to CSTO's response, the speaker said that the CSTO's reaction must be much stricter.

But Stepan Grigoryan most emphasized the reaction of Armenia and underlined that Armenia should make a quick and big international fuss, first of all, as a UN member referring to the organization with the request to call a session of the UN Security Council. In addition, according to Political Expert, showing everyone the aggressive actions of Azerbaijan, Armenian side need to enhance its security zone, taking several vulnerable heights under the control of Armenian armed forces.

Alexander Markarov, Political Expert, expressed the view that the consequence of all is that Azerbaijan should be brought back to the negotiating table. "In order to bring Azerbaijan to the negotiating table, it’s necessary to show that they do not have any advantage in the military field," stressed the speaker.

Agassi Yenokyan predicts that military actions can be continued for up to 10 days, while Stepan Grigoryan and Alexander Markarov, most likely consider the continuation of these actions for a long period. "It depends on how strong will be the counter attack from the Armenian side, as Azerbaijan understands only this language. It is also important both the degree of pressure from the international community and Turkey's position," concluded the Expert.

“The person who lost freedom lost hope for life. He doesn’t know when he will be released and what awaits him.”
At the beginning I did not figure out how long I will stay in prison. In Nubarashen penitentiary the cells are in a poor condition. The walls are covered with mould, insects and even scorpions entered the cells. The air was stuffy. Sometimes 14 people would stay in a cell equipped for 12.
