“The Press Conference Is a Scream about the Present State of the Armenian Judicial System”

“It is proved that Harutyun Sargsyan could not have been involved in Karen Yesayan’s murder. There is no reasonable evidence.” At the Media Center initiated press conference Lusine Sahakyan, Harutyun Sargsyan’s defender, and Avetik Ishkhanyan, Chairman of Armenia’s Helsinki Committee, shared their thoughts on the murder case of Karen Yesayan, fiancé of Gyumri Ex-Mayor Vardan Ghukasyan’s daughter.
Two years ago Harutyun Sargsyan, who is the son of Samvel Sargsyan, former chief of police for the town of Ani, was detained for Karen Yesayan’s murder.

Harutyun Sargsyan is alleged to have murdered Karen Yesayan out of jealousy whereas Lusine Sahakyan claims that Vardan Ghukasyan’s daughter and Harutyun Sargsyan did not even know each other. The Court of First Instance sentenced Sargsyan to 15 years of imprisonment. The Appeal Court did not grant a petition.

The lawyer believes “certain people intended to hide the real murderer. The Police did their utmost to convict Harutyun Sargsyan. Harutyun Sargsyan was brutally beaten by high ranking officials, and the only aim was to force him to admit his guilt.” According to Lusine Sahakyan, Harutyun Sargsyan’s relatives and friends were exerted pressure on. “The investigation agency tried to involve Sargsyan’s relatives in the crime, even his 80-year-old grandmother.”

Avetik Ishkhanyan said that the given investigation was carried out with violations of the right to a fair trial defined in the European Convention on Human Rights, as well as it violated the third clause of the Convention against torture.

Lusine Sahakyan filed an application to the Court of Cassation a month ago but there has not been any answer though the response period defined by the law is over. “I don’t believe that it is possible to realize justice in Armenia but sometimes I make attempts. And in this case there are all reasons and evidences to achieve justice. All is needed is that the Court of Cassation reviews the decisions of the Courts of First and Second Instances.”

Avetik Ishkhanyan noted that in Armenia “a fair trial is not carried out and controversial verdicts are made due to the lack of professionalism.”

“This press conference is a scream and attempt to draw the public attention to what is going on in the Armenian law enforcement and judicial systems, and how human destinies are manipulated,” said Avetik Ishkhanyan, Chairman of Armenia’s Helsinki Committee.
