Analyzing Environmental and Social Impact of Small Hydroelectric Power Plants in Armenia

During the research which was conducted from November 2013 to April 2014 researcher Victoria Burnazyan studied the workload of 100 small hydroelectric power plants on 47 rivers, as well as conducted environmental impact assessment for 25 plants and checked compatibility of their work with international conventions and RA legislation.

On June 4, 13:00-15:00 PM, during the discussion entitled “Analyzing Environmental and Social Impact of Small Hydroelectric Power Plants in Armenia” which was organized by Open Society Foundations-Armenia the independent researcher Victoria Burnazyan presented the results of the survey. 

The survey has been conducted in 12 communities that are directly affected by the work of the small hydroelectric power plants with a special emphasis on transparency and accountability mechanisms in the field of the state regulation of the stations.

Presenter Victoria Burnazyan holds a master’s degree in journalism from Armenian National Academy of Sciences. She currently works as an editor at ‘Ecolur’ informational agency.
