Tatevik Aghabekyan, Head of Critical Services against Sexual Abuse at the Women's Resource Center says there are shortcomings in the legislation which became a reason for the Women’s Resource Center to draft the amendment bill.
OSCE expert, co-author of the bill Davit Tumasyan mentioned that 71 cases of sexual crimes were registered in 2011, 105 cases in 2012, and during 6 months in 2013 – 59 cases. The number of sexual crimes tends to increase in Armenia; however, the statistics do not reflect reality as these crimes are latent.
Davit Tumasyan stressed that having sexual relationship with a person under 16 is prohibited irrespective of their citizenship or nationality.
On September 17, 10:30 the Media Center hosted a Press Conference on the “Amendment project in the articles on “Sexual Inviolability and Crimes against Sexual Freedom” of the 18th chapter of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Armenia.
