The draft law has been introduced by Orinats Yerkir party since 2011. The RA Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs joined the work on it later and provisions have been added defining gender as acquired social behavior.
This definition invoked misinterpretations and different parties and organizations have announced their discontent on it.
Berikyan stresses the concerns around law are groundless and he is surprised at the clamour raised around it.
“Our society doesn't really differentiate the concepts of sex and gender. Those are different notions that shouldn't be equated”, he says.
“We have been instructed by the Government and the Presidential Administration to change the definition in the law so that it is more understandable for broad sectors of society and excludes misinterpretations. I’m not a professional and I am far from that (LGBT) community but I don’t think they have any reference to this law”, the Deputy Minister notes.
